What’s the proper way to balance modern etiquette with traditional etiquette?

I feel that feminism has damaged and needlessly complicated a lot of the inter-gender etiquette rules.
For example, I make it a rule to open the door for any lady (and gentleman, but that’s irrelevant to this topic) I see. But I have been bashed a number of times for this, being told that “women are not fragile, and can take care of themselves”.
So, when studying modern etiquette forms, what is the best way to truly know whether something has been influenced by feminism/liberalism, or whether something is legitimately polite or not?
